Katy has always loved beautiful furniture, furnishings, and fabric, so the fit seemed natural when she started her Christchurch interior design business: Katy Rolleston Design. Working with multiple suppliers across the country, Hawthorne Collections quickly became a go-to on her quarterly trips up to Auckland. Katy has a passion for helping clients create a home which is functional, suited perfectly for you and your family, and beautiful… all at the same time.
What do you think makes a good interior design, into a great interior design?

I think it comes down to creating a look which is personal and functional to the client and of course looks and feels fabulous as well. It’s about fulfilling the client’s needs and wants, designing beautiful well thought out spaces which exceed their expectation.

Decision fatigue, it’s something that many of us struggle with – how do you reboot the decision process?

Oh, decision fatigue is something that I come across often with clients. There are so many options out there to choose from and often you can love a huge range of different styles. The process of pulling these together or narrowing them down can then create this ‘decision fatigue’. Fresh eyes on the project most definitely helps but also the process of elimination & taking a breather from the decision. After creating a concept I sit on it for a period of time and revisit it to refine the concept with fresh eyes, many times over.

Best design hack to balance life with children and a stylish home?

Washable covers for sofas and armchairs for high use areas.

What is your favourite piece of (Hawthorne) furniture/decor right now and why?

This is a tricky question because I love so many!!! But I am going to say the Keely and Lotus range for its versatility to look beautiful in so many homes. It also happens to be incredibly comfortable, have fabulous colour ways (so excited the Khaki is on its way to my client’s home as we speak). Washable, and you can also buy extra covers for it, how cool!

Trends come and go, are there any you see sticking around?

They certainly do… Trends are a funny one because they tend to do a full circle!! I am all about the ‘curve’ & truly hope it’s here to stay!!

If you could choose a success story from your years in the business which project would it be?

Hmmm can I say all of them?? Because despite being big or small, I have gained something from every job and client who has entrusted me with their home. But if I must choose one, I am going to run with my first ever paid job!! Why? Because that is where it all begun and what lead me to where I am today, working with fabulous clients on their beautiful homes.

Next thing you’d love to do (in life/with the business)?

Lots of exciting things on the horizon. We are currently renovating our mid - century home in Christchurch, with our two busy boys which we have lots of exciting plans for. I feel very lucky to have a job which I love. I get to work with great clients on a variety of projects including new builds, renovations, full home furniture fit outs, window treatments and everything in between. 2023 I am already excited for all the fun to be had!
