Our first Q+A session is with the new owners of Home Edit Staging & Design, Katie & Dayna. We virtually sat down with the duo to learn more about what makes their wheels spin and of course find out some great staging tips when selling your abode.
You purchased the business recently, what sparked this buy?

We had been following the previous owners for a while and loved their aesthetic, interior design and real estate has always been a passion of ours and part of our careers, and once we found out they were selling it was a no-brainer to take over the amazing business they had already built and continue to grow it with our own personal touch.

What would you say your style is?

Our personal styles are very similar, we love clean contemporary design with touches of personality whether this be from colourful pops of art, high-end accessories like Tom Dixon candles, and luxe linens and textiles.

When choosing pieces for staging it’s important for us to use items that are on trend and that are attractive to a wide range of different buyers, we also have a range of different themes and styles to match the different styles and architecture of the homes we stage as they are all so different.

With everything going on in the COVID world right now, it’s hard to get creative sometimes, what do you draw inspiration from?

Instagram is our go-to! We follow hundreds of interior design pages and draw inspiration from those pages that complement our style and current pieces. Our wholesalers like Hawthorne put together inspiration on their websites with their pieces based on current trends with magazine style images. We are constantly sending each other posts and brainstorming different pieces to go together in our warehouse.

During covid we have found so many small NZ businesses like us that we have purchased from, from the most gorgeous faux-flowers, handmade candles, and art from local artists, we have added so much to our growing collection.

What is your favourite piece of (Hawthorne) furniture right now and why?

We are loving using natural textures in our installs at the moment. Our most recent purchase from Hawthorne was our gorgeous new Crusoe Root Side Tables which we have just used as bedside tables in a Mt Albert bungalow.

We are also adding cushions like the The Sadie Cushion to our collection, made of rustic thick cotton these look amazing on armchairs.

Best home staging decorating tip?

Less is more! Decluttering a space and removing personal items like family photos is so important not only to make the space feel bigger, but so potential buyers can envision their pieces and themselves fitting perfectly into the home.

Next thing you’d love to do (in life/with the business)?

We have starting building on the interior design side of the business. Many clients whose homes we have staged have asked us to help with choosing pieces for their new homes. There’s nothing more rewarding to us than when our clients love what we have chosen for them that they want it in their next home and the fact that we have relationships with incredible wholesalers like Hawthorne means that it is a more affordable option for them too.
